3 reasons why counting calories sucks

Apr 02, 2014

Here, I give you 3 reasons why counting calories sucks ... and 3 reasons why it's so important

1.  It's math.  People hate math.

2.  It's not easy.  Not all food has calorie information on it - so what are we supposed to do then??  Go online and look it up?  What a pain.

3.  Internet experts tell us it's not necessary.  "Eat whatever the hell you want!  As long as they are 'good' calories, you also will be good!"

If you can't tell, I'm being a little sarcastic with some of these reasons.  Because if you have a weight loss or body composition goal, then you need to pay attention to calories.

But notice, I said you need to PAY ATTENTION to calories.  I didn't say you needed to count calories.

I call it CALORIE AWARENESS.  You have to have an understanding of calories before you progress to any other level of understanding of your body and food.

Why?  Here are 3 reasons:

1.  It's information.  Information is valuable, and information will help you towards your goal.

2.  Sometimes our weight makes NO sense.  I've had numerous clients over the years who have gained or lost strange amounts of weight in short periods of time.  If you have an idea of how many calories you're getting each day, then you can adjust accordingly.  Sometimes, to lose weight, we actually have to start eating MORE!  (there's my next blog!)  You would never know this if you didn't have a base understanding of calories.

3.  You can't reach a higher understanding of your body if you don't understand calories.  If you want to have an understanding of protein, carbs, and fat, you'd better first have an understanding of calories.  If you don't, it would be like entering a Calculus class without understand addition and subtraction.

Don't be intimidated by the term "counting calories," because it's not about calorie counting, it's about "CALORIE AWARENESS."
