Here's what to eat before your workout today

Jul 06, 2015

A question I get all the time is “When and what should I eat before a workout?”

I see TWO scenarios:

WORKING OUT AFTER BEING AWAKE FOR AT LEAST 2 HOURS:
In this scenario, I think it’s quite simple: eat a regular meal about 2 hours before your workout. Don’t overcomplicate this. Some people may prefer a longer time between eating and their workout, and this is fine. I’ve had many clients who feel nauseous if they eat too close to their workout.

“But Steve, what if I’m too busy and I forget to eat?” My advice to you is don’t forget! If you take your health and your fitness seriously and you have goals, then stick to the plan! There are too many convenient eating options out there for this to be an issue …. However, IF this does happen, I suggest eating an apple before your workout. Not a banana. An apple. Why? Longer lasting energy.

WORKING OUT FIRST THING IN THE MORNING:
Logistically, if you are working out first thing in the morning, it is impossible to eat a full meal before your workout. In this case, my advice to you is this: eat a tablespoon of natural peanut or almond butter when you wake up. In addition, you might want to eat a good meal a little bit later the night before.

But Steve, they say you’re not supposed to eat close to bedtime.

Who says this? Why? What?? Remember, look at your diet/lifestyle as a whole. Don’t break down one isolated meal or action and think that it’s making or breaking you.
