Which cardio machine is the best?

The cardio machines you typically see: stationary bike (sitting up), recumbent bike (as if you're in a recliner), rowing machine, stepper, elliptical, treadmill

 

I'll get to the point: if you don't have any health concerns or limitations, I believe the rowing machine is far superior to any of the other cardio machines.  When done the right way and with proper form, the calorie burn is higher and the results are just better.  Check out this comparison:

 

This first picture is from the rowing machine:

I rowed for 22:36 and burned 296 calories.  That's 13.15 calories per minute, or 789 per hour.  

 

This second picture is from the stationary bike:

I biked for 12:46 and burned 109 calories.  That's 8.6 calories per minute, or 515 calories per hour.  

 

That's a significant difference.  Now look, this is one exercise session.  I could have pedaled harder and that calorie burn would have been more.  But I'm not trying to trick you here; I have no deal with the rowing machine company.  I exerted myself equally on both machines.  The rowing machine is just harder.  On the stationary bike, you're really just pedaling.  On the rowing machine, you're doing so much more.  Push off with your feet.  Transition into pulling with your back and hips.  Transition again into pulling with your lats and arms and shoulders.  There's even a little bit of a calf raise in there.  

 

Overall, I rate the rowing machine as the best cardio machine that you can typically find at the gym.  Here are my complete ratings:

TO INCREASE YOUR GENERAL FITNESS: Rowing machine

FOR A SESSION OF HIIT: Recumbent or Stationary Bike - they're just the most convenient for changing intensity from moderate to really high ... Rowing machine could also be the winner of this category

FOR PEOPLE WITH HERNIATED DISCS IN THEIR BACK (*and there are a lot of you): Unequivocally walking on the treadmill is the best form of cardio

FOR "I LIKE TO READ WHEN I AM DOING BORING CARDIO" PEOPLE**: Recumbent bike

ALMOST USELESS UNLESS YOU HAVE SPECIAL INJURY CONCERNS OR YOU JUST PREFER IT TO THE OTHER MACHINES: Elliptical
